Food For Thought

Dear friends…

They say that the shortest path to a man’s heart is by his stomach and I’d like to confirm their – whoever they may be – truthiness. I love food. I may be married to my work, but a delicious meal is my mistress.

If there ever could be plate to launch a thousand ships, I’m certain that it’d include smoked salmon. My lunch in Vratsa didn’t look like much, the lumps of butter mellowing on spartan slices of toast, but it really was heavenly. I feel hungry just thinking about it again.

On the salmon’s heels would have to be the delicious lamb face I ordered in Shumen. By taste alone, distinguishing the meat’s cut would have been difficult; The fall-apart tender consistency was what won me over.

I also had pork tongue and stomach for that meal, but that wasn’t as much of a hit, and my dinner companions retreated back to the safety of chicken and potatoes.

These gastronomical treats don’t exist in my small village; We haven’t even a single restaurant and I’ve cooked for myself at home almost every day for the past two months. There is, wonderfully, once a year when there’s an exception to this: praznik selo, the village holiday.

Because Samuil is the administrative center for the municipality, many people from neighboring villages visit to enjoy the festivities, the concerts, and the wrestling matches.

And the food.

A few dollars’ worth of change opens up a smorgasbord of vendor food. A friend of my work counterpart manned the grill for hundreds of kebapche through the two days of celebration.

My favorite unhealthy snacks were the ponichki, freshly fried and served piping hot under chocolate syrup, sprinkles, and crushed peanuts. Krispy Kremes have nothing on these; If I had just a day left to live, I would considering spending part of it eating a sack full of ponichki.

I’ll definitely have to learn how to make everything I like to eat here so I can make them to share when I come back home. I miss all of you.

We gotta eat lamb face together sometime. I’m planning a day trip to Shumen either this weekend or next. Want to meet up?
And I’m asking around about mushroom hunting as well. Great post!
